Reports that ten major road improvement schemes that were
due to start within a few months may be postponed were met with
dismay by David Frost, Director General of the British Chambers
of Commerce.
He said: "It is an inescapable fact that the roads are
the most important transport network and a recent business transport
survey found that increasing road capacity is the top business
priority for 50% of companies compared to only 21% who wish to
see increased investment in rail.
The overwhelming majority of the population rely on roads
for their daily activities and that includes businesses for whom
roads are essential. When road capacity increases were announced
last July we hoped this signalled the end of the stop go era
of much needed road building schemes, which is why the concerns
of the Highways Agency are so alarming. There must be significant
more road investment."
