The performance of Britain's small firms has improved sharply,
according to the latest NatWest Survey of Small Businesses in
Britain. For the first time in 18 months the survey found that
over half of the respondents reported significant improvements
in their sales.
Government regulations and paperwork remains the top-ranked
problem for small business, in particular in agriculture, business
services, retail and personal services, with over 15% claiming
that it is the biggest single problem facing their business at
any one time. Over the past year, there has been a marked reduction
in the number of firms reporting that the economic climate is
affecting the profitability of their business, from 20% to 11%.
Cash flow/payments/debtors (11%) is also now one of the top
ranked problems, predominately for the larger firms in the survey,
manufacturers, communications companies and those involved in
transport/travel/storage
